• Updated per: William R. Buck and Bernard Goffinet "A new checklist of the mosses of the continental United States and Canada," The Bryologist, 127(4), 484-549, (11 December 2024). https://doi.org/10.1639/0007-2745-127.4.484.

• Accepted names in bold. Subspecies, varieties and forms are listed only if they appear in the above reference.

• Select synonyms have been added to enhance the usefulness of this list with all the references noted on the main moss page.

• There are many nomenclatural differences between this list and European sources (including iNaturalist). The paper above is viewed as definitive.

• The polygon below was used to retrieve geographic distribution in early 2024 and early 2025 from Consortium of Bryophyte Herbaria Portal, https://bryophyteportal.org/portal

• POLYGON ((46.80111 -74.15771,49.59866 -65.98389,49.14061 -63.63281,44.76253 -60.86426,41.01157 -70.33447,40.99498 -74.53125,46.80112 -74.15772))

• There are numerous discrepancies between BFNA and bryoportal.org. I suspect these are mostly related to nomenclatural issues. I've attempted to ignore obvious errors but ranges should be considered a guideline and not definitive.

• Perhaps half of the bryoportal.org Connecticut records are from the 1800s and early 1900s and the populations likely extirpated. Those have been excluded from this list. The relatively few Rhode Island records were all ignored based on those same conditions.
